Frequently asked questions
What is this?
Liberty caps - or Psilocybe semilanceata - are a psilocybin-containing mushroom that grow naturally in many parts of the world. We believe such mushrooms can help individuals and societies to flourish. Magic Mushroom Map is our best effort at using all available data to maximise your chance of being in the right place at the right time to find liberty caps.
How does it work?
We use statistical models to learn about how the presence of liberty caps is influenced by environmental factors (e.g. soil properties, weather) based on thousands of crowdsourced reports. For more information please read our Field Guide.
What data do you use?
We'd like to thank everyone behind the following datasets, without which Magic Mushroom Map would not be possible:
- Weather: ERA5 by ECMWF (historical), GFS by NOAA (forecast)
- Land cover: WorldCover by European Space Agency
- Soil properties: SoilGrids by ISRIC
- Elevation: GLO-90 by Copernicus
- Occurence records: Psilocybe semilanceata by GBIF (subset shared under CC-BY)
